top songs of summer 2009

I was sitting here updating my iTunes and making CDs and decided to research the "official" songs of Summer 2009. I found a couple lists, but none seemed to be very updated.

This are the Top 5 songs that are played on the radio this season from Rhapsody:
  1. LoveGame--> Lady Gaga
  2. Waking Up in Vegas--> Katy Perry
  3. 1901--> Phoenix
  4. Don't Trust Me--> 3OH!3
  5. Hot Revolver--> Lil Wayne

These are the top songs according to People Magazine:
  • I Gotta Feeling--> Black Eyed Peas
  • LoveGame--> Lady Gaga
  • Goodbye--> Kristinia DeBarge
  • Battlefield--> Jordin Sparks
  • Please Don't Leave Me--> Pink
  • Best I Ever Had--> Drake
  • Birthday Sex--> Jeremih
  • Use Somebody--> Kings of Leon
  • 21 Guns--> Green Day
  • Man in the Mirror--> Michael Jackson

And apparently these are the top country songs:
  1. Livin For the Night--> George Strait
  2. Summer Nights--> Rascal Flatts
  3. Small Town USA--> Justin Moore
  4. Indian Summer--> Brooks & Dunn
  5. Alright--> Darius Rucker

I can't 100% agree with any of these lists. Somewhat-working in radio gives me the knowledge of the 5 songs you're guaranteed to hear every hour:
  • Halo--> Beyonce
  • Don't Trust Me--> 3OH!3
  • That's Not My Name--> Ting Tings
  • I Gotta Feeling and/or Boom Boom Pow--> Black Eyed Peas
  • LoveGame--> Lady Gaga
  • and Taylor Swift.. Whether it be Love Story or You Belong With Me

Now, because you care and like to know my opinion, I shall come up with my own list of top songs for Summer 2009. [This is based on a combination of good representation of what we have heard AND great songs.]

Honorable Mention: When Love Takes Over--> Kelly Rowland and David Guetta
A lot of people probably don't agree with me, but if you ever go to McFadden's in DC [like I do every Friday night] then you'll hear this song and magically transport to this super-fun place and hear everyone banging on the walls to the beat.

10. Don't Trust Me--> 3OH!3
"Do the Helen Keller, and talk with your hiiiiiiiips." How can you not think of this summer when you hear that line? It's on repeat everywhere I go. [The line, that is.. Not the entire song.]

9. Goodbye--> Kristinia DeBarge
Unfortunately this song didn't play on the radio enough, I don't think. This girl is great, and it's a great song and should have been blasted constantly. That's really the only explanation I have.

8. Waking Up in Vegas--> Katy Perry
A song about going out, getting plastered, and waking up in the morning like WTF. The definition of summer? Plus, it's Katy Perry. She had the #2 song of last summer and she's undeniable.

7. Good Girls Go Bad--> Cobra Starship ft. Leighton Meester
This song is coming into play at the end of the summer, but it's a good, up-beat song to get you pumped up. Add in the rumor/pictures of Leighton, the Gossip Girl star, having a sex tape, and you got yourself a song worth talking about and listening to.

6. Sideways--> Dierks Bentley
I love country songs in the summer. There's nothing better than driving down the highway, windows down, blasting country music and singing at the top of your lungs. Another song about going out and drinking, with a good sound-- A++.

5. LoveGame--> Lady Gaga
Like Katy Perry, she's irresistible. I don't know that there is going to be a time where we don't have a Gaga song on constant rotation at the radio stations anytime soon. People love 'em all. Add in a girl taking a ride on a disco stick and well... It's a nice raunchy song that kids won't understand.

4. Out Last Night--> Kenny Chesney
Kenny Chesney is the definition of summertime right up there with Jimmy Buffet. Like I said before- Songs about going out are also the definition of summertime. Two definitions in one?! Shoot... It's a no-brainer!

3. Boom Boom Pow/I Gotta Feeling--> Black Eyed Peas
Going an hour at the beginning of the summer without hearing Boom Boom Pow would have been a miracle... Now that's the case with I Gotta Feeling. The best part about it: I still love both of the songs!

2. The Way You Make Me Feel--> Michael Jackson
Let's be real for a second... Michael Jackson IS this summer. His death was the most tragic day of the summer, and to this day everyone is still talking about him, his death, his scandals, whatever they're digging up at the moment. This is my favorite song of his.

1. Summer Nights--> Rascal Flatts
Does this really need an explanation? It's called Summer Nights. It's by Rascal Flatts. The lyrics are fantastic, the beat is super fun, and it won't ever get old! It's the title of my playlist for all of these songs, and the lyrics are the titles of all my Facebook photo albums for these couple of months. Love, love, love it, and you better agree!

What would you add?! How would your list go?! Add it below, or vote for your faves! I'll post the results on Thursday to bring back the day of Top 10's.

Now I shall go sing.

love,
elizabethany
