pinspiration fail!: fishnet nails aren't easy

Part of the reason I want to do this here month is to try things that I'm not sure I believe will actually work. These fishnet nails that seem like they'd be pretty easy to accomplish were the first trial... and were a total fail.

[Don't mind the messiness around the edges. I took pictures pre-cleanup like a dummy.]

I used a thicker mesh that I had leftover from my earring holder, put it down on my nail when it was only halfway dry, and patted loose glitter on it. The only "fishnet design" going on is the slight indent you can see, almost like I just stamped the fishnet on.

Maybe I shouldn't call it a complete fail, though. Even though there's nothing fancy to the glitter design, I do enjoy the black and glittery accent nail.

Also, they went perfectly with my outfit. I tried to embrace the whole black and white in the summer trend with some pink accents for our artist spotlight with Capital Cities. [Sorry the picture quality sucks!]

As always, if you've tried this pin and done something to make it actually work, let me know! Post a link, send a picture, etc!

pinspired recipe: super simple banana chips

Football season is over, I'm a [not so] solid ten pounds heavier than last summer, and I've eaten enough junk/dine-out food to last me a decade. I looked at Pinterest for healthy things and went straight to the grocery store.

I'm a huge fan of all fruit and most vegetables, so it's not hard for me to eat healthy, but I do like to switch things up. The banana chips pin looked like they came straight out of a dried fruit bag and seemed simple so I tried it.

When I first pulled them out of the oven, I'm not going to lie to you, I damn near took them straight to the trash. They were so brown and unappealing, and really not that dry. I tried them anyway, and they were good! I just couldn't look at them while I picked them out.

RECIPE:
  1. Slice up a bunch of bananas. [I did two, and they lasted me about 3 minutes.]
  2. Spritz or sprinkle some lemon juice on them
  3. Bake for an hour at 200 degrees
  4. Flip and bake for another hour
  5. The longer they sit out afterwards, the dryer they'll get.
They say the riper the banana, the sweeter they'll taste, and as far as I can tell, that's true. I also saw some variations where you sprinkle cinnamon [without sugar] on them, or drizzle chocolate for a dessert. I will definitely be trying the cinnamon next time.

Some things to know:
  • The slices will shrink significantly
  • They will get much more brown than when you started
  • The thicker the slice, the more soft they'll be coming out of the oven
  • Lemon juice isn't necessary

I'll probably be filling you in on lots of Pinspired recipes I try, if they come out differently than I imagined. If not, I'll inform you on Twitter how delicious they were.

pinspired: hair chalking is a bust! for brunettes

I've been wanting to try this hair chalking for over a year, and I finally got a huge thing of them for Christmas! Today I finally had enough time to play with them and a reason to make my hair fun [we have another club night tonight]!

I totally thought this was going to be easy, it'd stick to my hair even more because of the coloring in it, and I'll be rainbow-fabulous in no time. I followed the directions on the box, which was simply to spray my hair with water or leave-in conditioner, then rub it on. This is what I got:

With flash, hoping it'd look a little different.

Not only can you barely see it, but within an hour, it was off my hair and dusted all over my shirt, just leaving my hair feeling gross.

I decided to watch YouTube videos and see if there was a better technique, and this chic seemed to have it down. Tried her trick of wetting your hair and the chalk, then coat the chalk on heavily, but only in one direction.

While it's clearly much more visible, within about 30 minutes it looked like this [super clumpy/flaky].

I tried to straighten it and comb it once or twice to even it out, and that just took all the color right out. AKA:

I say only for brunettes because it was definitely more bright and noticeable on my blonde streaks, so when I go lighter in the summer I will absolutely be trying again, but I think it's a lost cause for now. Hair has gone up in a bun.

The chalks I used were a Christmas gift, so I don't know if the kind/brand has anything to do with it [I'm sure some work better than others], but I'm assuming these pastels are basically the same across the board unless you pay a lot of money.

If you've ever done it on darker hair and have a different technique for me, PLEASE help a girl out!
