But seriously, y'all... Before the internet, before cell phones... how did ANYONE have a social life?! I'm baffled. I can't figure it out. This video is asking all the questions, and reminding us of how life was... if we can even pretend to remember how it was.

flashback: remember when being on the computer was like this?

I've always been a bit of a computer nerd.. but the cool kind, of course. I had the ultimate [Sub]profile on AIM..

[One of the most embarrassing things I have ever put on the internet was this here letter that apparently appeared in my "subby," according to documents I found on my hard drive.]

My buddy icons were so on point.

[I probably got grounded or something, hence the "I'm back!"]

 Speaking of icons, I obviously collected all the best for my MySpace background.

[I'm pretty bothered that I let one with the worst grammar ever make it on there....]

And I totally made a really intense website for my senior class that told everyone where their classmates were headed. [If only I still had a screenshot of that... Turns out netcolony.com websites have finally disappeared.]

But maybe you weren't as nerdy cool as me... I bet you still remember this stuff.

So... mesmerized.....

FINALLY!

Turns out this little guy who kept you company on your desktop was nothing but a virus. 

And this guy shoulda been a virus so I could have killed him with help from my BFF McAfee.

No other picture will ever make me love the Internets of today more than this one.

GoodNESS I used to be emotional. Glad I grew some thick skin. 

The possibilities for nostalgia in a post like this are endless, but I'm to the point where I'm way too embarrassed of the words I used to put out for the world, so I'm outtie.

a guide to using the internet in 1996

It's hard to think of any real disadvantages of the Internet these days, but in 1996, there were plenty... especially according to this guide for high school students.


Sure, addiction, security, and constant change is still an issue, but beyond the media trying to shut down Facebook by saying its privacy settings are terrifying, no one is really caring.

Thank GOD speed isn't an issue anymore... but chatrooms need to come back. I need to meet some new friends, damnit!

prince is silly

Prince is about to release a new album that won't be downloadable anywhere. Not iTunes. Not blogs [yet, anyway]. Not his website [he shut that down]. Not YouTube.

Why? Well, he hates the Internet. He's one of those trying to make sure he earns every last penny his music makes.

Also: He thinks the Internet is "over".


Ohhh, silly Prince. Haven't you heard I'm about to make $100,000 a year to play on the Internet?
Don't ya know that regardless of you releasing or allowing your music on the Internet, it'll end up there anyway?
Have you ever heard of blogs? They find ways around everything.
Also: The Internet is hardly "over." In fact, your sales will probably be down I would assume 50-75% because of this little belief and protest of yours.

Soo... Good luck with that, dude.

As for the MTV comment: RUDE. Maybe MTV is completely different than it used to be. Maybe the M doesn't stand for "music"... But it has The Jersey Shore, 16 and Pregnant, THE REAL WORLD... It's still pretty great for some people.... Just not the music peeps.

Nice try, Prince. Nice try to convince us all that it's the end of the world.
